“I want to tell a story, capture the essence of movement within the stillness of drawing. I want to give substance to the oneiric world and imprint the memories enclosed within me in a piece of art”
Hi! I’m Alice d’Apolito aka Lice-works, an Italian artist who lives, works, and studies Japanese language in Leeds.
I started my journey through art with some abstract shapes on canvas and collecting little things for collages. When I was in high school I studied Cinema and Photography at the ISA Fellini Institute in Misano. At the time, as a self-taught artist, I began to create short animations in 2D through photography. More and more curious about this technique, I decided to enroll in Animation at the International Comics School of Padova. It was after living 6 years in Bologna that I moved to England, where I started to devote myself almost entirely to drawing.
At the beginning my drawings were full of lines and shadows. Gradually, I achieved a line which was more and more continuous, clearer and clearer, although without caring about perfection or realism. I like to leave the pure concept on paper through a clear and direct image: it makes me feel mentally “clean”, it lets me clear my mind.
To date, I live in Leeds, where I have taken some screen printing courses at Leeds College of Art and the course of Conceptual and Editorial Illustration with Harriet Lee-Merrion. I have produced promotional materials for live music events, several album covers, erotic fanzines, graphic logos, posters for shops, illustrations for children and animation books, and created my own brand of T-shirt and hoodie.
In my paintings, every time I create a new image of myself, embracing the idea that creation is a process which never ends. Most of my works are autobiographical in nature, describing feelings, dreams, childhood memories and concepts inspired by current affairs. I tried to connect my real world with my oneiric one by giving substance to my dreams and representing memories long gone. Inspired by Japanese culture and surrealistic paintings I create my work using oil paint on wood panels.
The things that represent my technique the most are clean lines, full blocks of vivid colors and pale big faces, paying as much attention to details as possible. I have exhibited my works in both Europe and the UK, in galleries, art studios, independent bars and café. My illustrations and comics were published in various magazines, both in the UK and Europe. My paintings are inspired equally by our surroundings and the world of dreams. A celebration of vivid colors and forms give my characters and myself space to breathe.
